Anthony Culverwell aka DJ Switch is one of the UK’s most promising upcoming talents and our most proudest achievement to date.
As FOUR TIMES national champion, and TRIPLE WORLD DMC BATTLE CHAMPION, Mr Switch has recently won the prestigious DMC World mixing championship he's also an artist keen to explore the undiscovered gems of music and share them, while displaying his technical prowess, he already represents the way forward in the art of the DJ.
Having begun at the tender age of 11, he remained self-taught for two years until being educated at the Academy.
From 2005 onwards he has had several major breaks; winning the Youth Music mix tape competition to play to crowds of thousands at an opening slot at the Homelands festival (despite sending the cassette - yeah, we roll old school like that! - in at the last minute); making appearances on Radio 1, Blue Peter, MTV, ITV, 1Xtra, BBC Breakfast, as well as various radio shows and newspaper articles; supporting old school artists (Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash) right through to the new school (Q-Bert, DJ Kentaro & the Scratch Perverts) and even appearing on stage at the Royal Albert Hall!!!!.
But Switch really made his name in the underground DJ battle circuit. His first break there also came in 2005, where he beat 25 other competitors in the Derby regional heat to gain entry to the national final - aged only sixteen. He took the 'Battle for Supremacy' title in 2006 - the youngest winner the country has seen of ANY category - and now holds three consecutive battle titles, again a feat that has not been replicated by anyone else in England.
He raised his total number of titles to four with his DJ crew Bionic Stylus becoming Britain's team champions in 2008. And topped this off with becoming a 2008 WORLD CHAMPION.
But Anthony has not just confined himself to battling, regularly getting involved in community work and youth education. The ‘Soundshifter’ project saw him working with several multi-instrumentalists to help young music students create their own experimental compositions; he has helped run temporary broadcast stations to give young people training experience; ‘Start Local’ saw him aiding Birmingham-based bands and vocalists in improving their performing talents, and he has also helped in various peoples' DJ tuition.
Don't confuse this switch with any other - In his live performances, he has always proven to be a crowd pleaser, wherever he goes. Everything is “cut, pasted and mixed to make a tasty lasagne” - an approach which few are either prepared or technically able to do.
“You never know what he’s gonna play next!” - DJ Feva, Munchbreak
"Blimey, he's a cheeky little blighter in't he?" - Steph, Furious P's sister
